House on the Outskirts
07/03 2011
This house was built on the outskirts of Brussels by Belgian architect/engineer firm Samyn & Partners who were contracted by a cinematographer and his family. The idea behind this house was to have something that would be integrated into the surroundings. It was not of course as some people see it, to be almost ‘camouflaged’ in it’s environment but rather something that would be harmonious with the environment. The back of the house which is first visible as you go along the driveway is draped in a carpet of flora, that has been ‘grown’ to the side of the house. Which as we see, the greens help mask it into its surroundings but still keeping its lines as a built structure.
The back of the house is a rounded shape that is designed to allow the suns path to distribute its rays along the back to the plants growing on the house. The plants although decorative would also provide a decent amount of insulation to the house. Once we move to the front of the house we can see a beautiful glass facade that stretches across the length of the house. This is what provides an amazing amount of natural into the house.
The house itself is 3 levels with a basement that appears to be used as a studio or dark room. The rest of the house is also made up of a mix of studios and bedrooms. The natural light from those windows would be just awesome for a studio, nothing more inspiring. Overall it is a very elegant house that provides a liveable house to its owners, not just a sculptural piece of architecture.
We also managed to get a few images of the plans and a really good looking model of the house. We get a really good idea of how the house was designed, as this amalgamation of work and living. It is a great modern example of Bauhaus or New Objectivity architecture.
